Pako’s Eye-P-A – Snake River Brewing – #ThristyThursday

The Snake River is a long river that flows through several western brewing states.  Therefore, one of Jackson Hole’s finest, Snake River Brewing, is named for this body of water.

One of their beers, Pako’s EYE-P-A (IPA, for those that don’t get it), is a deliciously hoppy beer that comes in with a respectable 60 IBUs.  For people who love a hoppy beer with some bite, this is a beer that you will love.  It recently made it’s way back on to the taps at my favorite watering hole and I decided to finally give it a try.  I was quite happy with my choice.  This is a straight up hoppy beer.  It isn’t one with hints of spice or fruit, it is hops and good hops at that.  And weighing in at 6.8% ABV it packs a punch.  We recommend you check out this delicious beer from our favorite beer region (the Northwest).

TNBS Classics: Creamed Chicken and Biscuits – Tuesday Foodsday

We cannot deny that comfort food has a place in our hearts.  There is something about creamy, unhealthy foods that make us feel sooo good.  This week we take a look at a simple recipe that can be very versatile: Creamed Chicken and Biscuits.

6 TBSP butter (not margarine or butter substitute, butter)
6 TBSP flour
1 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground black pepper
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
1 cup milk/cream (not skim)
1-2 cups cooked chicken

Melt the butter, blend in the flour, salt and pepper (this is called Roux).  Cook over low heat until bubbling.  Remove from heat and stir in the broth and milk.  Bring to a boil and boil for 1 minute, stirring constantly.  Gently stir in chicken.  The chicken can be diced or pulled, your preference.

You can find the biscuit recipe on most biscuit mix boxes or many flour bags.  Serve the creamed chicken over the biscuits.  This  is versatile because you can add vegetables such as corn, peas, carrots, broccoli, etc. to the mix (make sure they are cooked beforehand).  This creamed chicken recipe is also good as the filling to a pot pie.

Disappearing Night – aka belle – #MusicMonday

Boise has a growing music scene.  Most people know Built to Spill and latest up-comer Youth Lagoon.  But there are plenty of other great bands in town and many of them will be featured at SXSW.  Today we are letting you know about a great album from one of these Boise bands: aka belle.

Disappearing Night is a great album for those that dig an indie folk-rock type feel.  With excellent female vocals and lyrical stylings, I’ve been listening the heck out of this album since buying it at the tail end of last year.  The band has a good time with their music and doesn’t take themselves too seriously.  we submit “(i’m) give mice elf to you” as evidence.

Go buy this album and enjoy it.

2011-2012 NCAA Football Bowl Predictions Week 4

Each week we will make our picks for that week’s bowls with the winner in Bold.  The following week we will make our predictions and then give you a tally of how we have done so far.  As of right now, we are 17-15.

The Big Ten killed me.  Most won when I picked them to lose and lost when I picked them to win.  It was another round of well played bowls.  If it wasn’t the Big Ten, then kickers were the other ones killing me.  Seriously, Stanford AND Georgia blew kicks that took me from 19-13 to 17-15.  Jerks.

WTF Clemson?

Cotton Bowl
Arkansas vs Kansas State

BBVA Compass Bowl
Pittsburgh vs SMU

I think the Mustangs show their are ready for Big East play.

GoDaddy.com Bowl
Northern Illinois vs Arkansas State

NIU looked good in the Humanitarian Bowl (now the Potato Bowl) last year in the midst of a coaching change.  I think it is Arkansas State’s turn.  Plus AS was pretty good and under the radar this year.

BCS Championship
LSU vs Alabama

The rematch happened.  People that aren’t fans of LSU and Bama will probably be as disappointed with the game as they were the first time around.  Missed field goals, sloppy offensive play and a craptastic score.  And we don’t like Saban.

Smorgasbord of Fun – #FridayFunday

Today we give you a collection of things that could make you laugh:

TNBS Classics: Samichlaus Bier – #ThirstyThursday

We came across an article somewhere talking about beers with interesting stories behind them.  Samichlaus Bier was one of those beers.    Samiclaus Bier is brewed by Castle Brewing in Eggenberg, Austria.  Here is the back story:

Samichlaus is brewed once a year on December 6, and is aged for 10 months before bottling.  This specialty lager is perhaps the rarest in the world.  Samichlaus may be aged in the bottle for many years, older vintages become more complex with a creamy, warm finish.  This beer can be served with hardy robust dishes and desserts, particularly with chocolates, or as an after dinner drink by itself.  (Castle Brewing)

We were extremely intrigued by a beer that is brewed once a year and is then aged for 10 months.  We happened to walk into our go-to specialty beer supplier and they had it in 22 oz bottles.  So one was purchased and shared amongst The Next Bar Stool’s beer panel (2 women, 5 men).  Some loved it, some thought it was OK, but nobody hated it.  After discussion it was thought that this would be best served as mentioned above, as an after dinner nip or in the realm of a port or cordial.

The flavor is sweet and strong.  It had a wonderful caramel flavor with a sweet after taste that is balanced with the hops and malt.  We could easily see drinking this on Christmas Eve next to a fire or after the Christmas dinner.  It comes in at 14% ABV so a 22 oz bottle is worth sharing (we got 6 out of 1 bottle with 2 people sharing) because it is technically Malt Liquor because of it’s ABV.

The final piece is the recommendation from the brewer and our salesperson.  If you buy this, buy 2-3 bottles.  Consume 1 and age the other 1 or 2.  We will be heading back to get one for Christmas and one for next year.

Update 1/5/2012: We cracked open that cellar aged bottle this year at our Christmas party and it was even tastier.

Yes, this is the actual bottle we consumed.
